The Pathbreak Attack Map for AWS / CloudTrail
Defense evasion CloudTrail T1562.008

Degrade CloudTrail configuration

Can repoint or degrade a trail (dead bucket, drop multi-region).

Grants escalation on its own.

cloudtrail:UpdateTrail
Key takeaway

On its own, cloudtrail:UpdateTrail can repoint or degrade a trail (dead bucket, drop multi-region). On a wide resource scope that alone reaches blinded detection or removed guardrails.

Why it is dangerous

A principal can call cloudtrail:UpdateTrail on the trail to send delivery to an attacker-controlled or non-existent S3 bucket, or to turn off multi-region and global-service events. The trail is still 'logging' but the records never land anywhere useful.

In MITRE ATT&CK terms this maps to T1562.008, Impair Defenses: Disable or Modify Cloud Logs, under the defense evasion tactic. AWS records it in CloudTrail as UpdateTrail. The call shows up in CloudTrail but blends into normal administration, so it needs a rule to stand out.

Breaking the path

A control that would remove it: Restrict cloudtrail:UpdateTrail to a break-glass role; deny org-wide via SCP and alarm on the event.

Whether to apply it depends on how the permission is used in your environment, so it is a business decision rather than an automatic fix. The same permission can be load-bearing in one account and pure risk in another.

Pathbreak confirms whether this path resolves in your account, ranks it against the others by how much it opens up, and uses your threat model and business context to show which paths are worth cutting.

Questions
